Legal notices tell the public about hearings, budgets, rezonings, foreclosures, tax sales, bids and more. In Florida they appear in several places at once. This page lists where to find the official versions for Fort Lauderdale and Broward County.
Where to look first
- Statewide, every notice printed in a Florida newspaper: FloridaPublicNotices.com, searchable, with the last 35 days and an archive
- Broward County’s notice website: BrowardCountyLegalNotices.com
- City of Fort Lauderdale notices (boil water, waterway advisories): city Public Notices page
- City meetings and hearings: Upcoming Public Meetings from the City Clerk
How Florida publishes legal notices
Under section 50.0211, Florida Statutes, a legal notice printed in a newspaper must also appear on that newspaper’s website the same day, and the newspaper must post it on the statewide site FloridaPublicNotices.com, run by the Florida Press Association. The statewide site must be searchable by party name and case number and keep an archive for 18 months. You can sign up there for text or email alerts.
Florida law also lets local governments publish some notices on a county website instead. In Broward that site is BrowardCountyLegalNotices.com, which the county describes as the designated public website for notices from participating local governments under section 50.0311. When we checked, its participants included the Broward County Tax Collector, Broward County Public Schools, the North Broward Hospital District, tax deed notices, and several cities, including Dania Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Plantation, Coral Springs, Cooper City, Deerfield Beach and Parkland. The City of Fort Lauderdale was not listed. You can subscribe to its notices by category.
City of Fort Lauderdale
- Boil water notices and waterway advisories: the city’s Public Notices page lists current and lifted precautionary boil water notices, test shutdowns and waterway advisories, newest first. City water also serves Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park, Port Everglades, Sea Ranch Lakes, Wilton Manors and parts of Davie and Tamarac, so a notice can apply there too.
- Public meetings: agendas for the City Commission and city boards are on the City Clerk’s upcoming meetings page and the city’s Legistar calendar.
- Zoning and development hearings: see building permits and zoning for Planning and Zoning Board and Board of Adjustment dates; applicants must post notice signs on the property 15 days before a hearing.
- Bids: the city posts bid results on its Bid Solicitation Results page.
Broward County
- Tax certificate sale lists: the Broward County Tax Collector’s delinquent real estate and tangible tax lists are posted on the county notice site.
- Tax deed auctions: Broward County RealAuction, run for the county’s Records, Taxes and Treasury Division, 954-831-4000 or 311.
- Value Adjustment Board: hearing notices and petition rules are on the VAB page; see our property taxes guide.
- Elections: the Supervisor of Elections posts its notices, including the Notice of General Election and book closing, at browardvotes.gov; see our voting guide.
A note for readers
If you have received a notice by mail, or saw one posted on a property, the dates and instructions in that notice are what count. Use the agency’s phone number on the notice to ask questions.
