Electricity in Fort Lauderdale comes from Florida Power & Light (FPL). Outages, downed lines and power restoration all go to FPL, not the city.

When the power goes out

  1. Check your breakers and whether neighbors are out too.

  3. Get updates in the FPL mobile app. FPL says you can text “App” to MyFPL (69375) to get a download link.
  4. Watch the map: fplmaps.com shows outages across FPL’s territory.

Downed lines and storm safety

From Broward County’s hurricane guide:

  • Treat every downed power line as if it is live. If a line is sparking or arcing, call 911.
  • Walk carefully and stay out of standing water, which can hide downed lines.
  • Do not go out after dark, when you may not see a line that is still energized.
  • Do not drive unless it is an emergency; traffic lights may be out.
  • Do not trim trees or plants growing on or near power lines yourself; only trained professionals should work near them. FPL’s tree guidelines are at FPL.com/Reliability.

Before a storm

  • Sign up for city alerts through Alert FTL and download the FPL app.
  • Portable generators of 10,000 running watts or less are exempt from Florida sales tax all year. See our hurricane prep guide.
  • Keep a battery-powered radio and flashlight with extra batteries, as the city’s kit list advises.
  • If someone in your home depends on electric medical equipment, plan for an outage and consider the county’s special needs shelter registry.

Complaints about service

If you cannot resolve a problem with FPL, the Florida Public Service Commission, which regulates investor-owned utilities, takes utility complaints online.

Starting or moving service

New residents start electric service with FPL; see our moving to Fort Lauderdale guide for links to the power, water and gas start-service pages.
